Iran-Iraq Earthquake

“New York Times is an old and well known news source. Founded in 1851 by Harry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. The company is well respected and known to be truthful. The New York Times has won 122 Pulitzer prizes which is more than any other news paper” (Jakob, CE 3).

“CNN is a fairly new news network, it being founded in 1980, but had quickly turned into one of the top news networks in America. One can assume that a news network would have to give out reliable information to become such a highly regarded one though CNN may have lost some credibility due to President Trump claiming that it is fake news.”(Jakob Bullwinkle, CE 2).

New York Times talks about the Iranians looking for survivors throughout the night from the earthquake that killed at least 341 people and injured over six thousand more. They also talk of how the epicenter of the earthquake was near Ezgeleh, Iran, which is about 135 miles northeast of Baghdad.

CNN talks about the earthquake stating that “at least 402 people have died after the deadliest earthquake of 2017 struck the border region between Iraq and Iran late Sunday. For the rescue efforts it is said that authorities in Iran and Iraq have initiated rescue operations and Iran has also declared three days of mourning.

The New York Times article is well written and informed. The article includes a good amount of pictures of those in Iran and Iraq and buildings that have been damaged or destroyed by the earthquake.

The CNN article is well informed as well and includes pictures of items relating to the topic. The only downside, that still persists, of CNN is a little popup that follows the reader as they scroll down the page to read more. Other than that the article is a nice read and is easy on the eyes.

“The framing of each article is generally very nice. The New York Times article is simple with a white background and black text. It includes pictures relating to certain sections of the writing and is set in clearly marked sections. The CNN article is similar in that it contains a white background with black text along with pictures matched accordingly with their subjects but also includes an annoying ad that stays in the readers screen as they scroll down taking up space on the right side of their screen and blocking other things that may be on the right side of the article.” (Jakob, CE 3)

New York Times talks of the papers released and how not all of the information on it is included because of sensitive information they aren’t willing to release for government security.

CNN talks about how the Trump released the papers and explains that the papers released do not include every document due to government security.

The New York Times article, which I recently found out is a student article, is a well informed and well sourced article. It contains a great deal of information dealing with this topic and giving background and current happenings with this topic. It’s a nice read and seems generally unbiased.

CE 3 Columbus Day

The New York Times article talks of Columbus day and how Berkeley, California was the first place to stop honoring Christopher Columbus and instead honor the Native Americans.

The CNN article talks of Columbus day as well (I mean I would hope they would since that’s the topic) and how since 2015 there are at least 14 communitites that have officially started celebrating indigenous peoples day.

The New York Times article, which I recently found out is a student article, is a well informed and well sourced article. It contains a great deal of information dealing with this topic and giving background and current happenings with this topic. It’s a nice read and seems generally un-biased.

The CNN article is well-informed and lengthy, though not in a bad way. The article includes the basic information on the subject and also asks and answers some questions I hadn’t even thought of. One of which being the subject of having work on Indigenous peoples day with their response being “Indigenous peoples day does not replace Columbus Day or make it a paid holiday if was not already one” (CNN).

North Korea threatening to shoot US planes. CE 2

CNN is a fairly new news network, it being founded in 1980, but had quickly turned into one of the top news networks in America. One can assume that a news network would have to give out reliable information to become such a highly regarded one though CNN may have lost some credibility due to President Trump claiming that it is fake news.

Washington Post is far older, it being founded in 1877. It was the City’s first newspaper to publish seven days a week and  in 1890 when it was sold to Frank Hatton and Beriah Wilkins they requested John Philip Sousa to compose a march for the newspaper to which Sousa composed “The Washington Post” which remains as one of Sousa’s best-known works.

The CNN article is lengthy and gives information on how the United States responded to North Korea’s threats to shoot down U.S. planes as well as what the US Military plans to do.

The Washington Post’s article isn’t as long but gives similar information as well as pictures of the armed forces practicing and a video of the White House press secretary Sarah Sanders saying that it’s “absurd” to think Trump’s U.N. speech was a declaration of war against North Korea”.

CNN  starts off explaining that North Korea presumed the US had declared war on them by tweeting something negative about them over twitter CNN then presents some quotes from North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho. After that CNN continues to present quotes from Sarah Sanders as well as a few other officials explaining that they had not declared war on North Korea.

The Washington Post begins by getting straight into the topic of North Korea threatening to  shoot down US military planes, even if they are currently occupying international waters. The post then presents some quotes from North Korea’s Foreign Minister and then goes on to the responses from multiple US officials.

Both articles both go over the same topic, as one would hope, with accuracy and reliability. While the Washington Post has less pictures and videos obstructing the text  and providing an easier read, CNN seems to provide more details as well as interesting pictures and a video. CNN also provides some history to North Korea’s multiple attacks on the US. The Washington Post doesn’t add the full quote from a statement but adds it in sections, an example being “Our goal is still the same,” she added. “We….”. CNN provides the full statement

Women in Combat

Due to my topic I had a hard time finding two valid articles describing the typical responses of Liberals and Conservatives as the rest were all long biased opinions on the topic. I find this article to describe both sides sincerely and have decided to use it. The article titled “Republicans and Democrats on Women in Combat” written by Phyllis address’s both sides well, provides the statements of both the Republican and Democratic platform, information about the physical evaluations, as well as some statistics on the dropout rate. The article starts off stating that is no surprise when the republican and democratic parties starting butting heads about this topic then provides a statement from the Republican party saying “We oppose unnecessary policy changes including Selective Service registration of women for a possible future draft. We reiterate our support for both the advancement of women in the military and their exemption from direct ground combat units and infantry battalions”. Then a short statement from the democratic platform saying that “We are proud of the opening of combat positions to women” but leaving out any opinions on the selective service. It then adds that seven female Marines tried out for combat in the first six months but only one woman passed the physical fitness test. Since six out of seven female recruits failed to pass the test the failure rate for women is 85.7 percent while the male recruit failure rate is 40 out of 1,500 or 2.7 percent. The article is a good article and is trying to give the news without telling the authors opinion on the subject. The selling point of this article is that it is unbiased on the matter and is simply trying to get the news out to the reader without forcing their opinion down their throats on the matter.
