Current Event 3 – California Fire Cleanup

Article 1

Assessment – The article provides a lot of information about the harmful chemical after effects from the fires. It is great that response teams are coming to help with this situation, but there is a huge risk of them getting sick from these chemicals.

Summary – These California fires have killed 40+ people, burned down around 5,700 buildings, and leveled about 213,000 acres of land since October 8th. Items around households have released harmful chemicals due to the fire. Items such as consumer electronics and, on older homes, asbestos shingles and galvanized nails.

Analysis – This article provided enough information for readers to gain knowledge about the dangerous chemicals that are a threat to their health. The article also provided information about how many buildings and acres were effected. This is information people effected by these fires would need to know.

Article 2

Assessment – The article went to a more personal level talking about the number of people missing and some facts about some of those who died in the fires. Also the winds did not help the situation blow at 35 to 45 mph, which caused the call for even more evacuations for the people of these counties in California.

Summary – These fires have caused a lot of damage and pain for Santa Rosa, Napa County, and Sonoma County. There are still around 235 missing out the 1,485 that originally were missing on Friday. It took around 2 million gallons of retardant to put out the entire fire over the past week in these three counties.

Analysis – The article being on a more personal level makes it easier for readers to connect and empathize with those effected. By talking about those missing and the damages and pain readers from all over can realize just how effected those in California are.

Comparison

Both of these articles spoke of the California fires that started this past weekend and have finally stopped within these past few days. They talk about harmful chemicals bin the air and wind speeds that caused the fire to spread even further, which in turn caused an enormous call for evacuation. They also talked about a large number of people that are still missing or dead due to the fires.

Opinion

This is a very tragic event that has caused an enormous amount of pain and suffering for the people that lived in Santa Rosa, Napa County, and Sonoma County ,California. Rescue teams are doing there best, but it is quite difficult to clean up this natural disaster due to the harmful chemicals that came from the houses because of the fires burning them down.

One thought on “Current Event 3 – California Fire Cleanup”

  1. I also wrote my current event about the northern California fires. Many people evacuated their homes due to the fires and are now returning home to the place of where their homes were but with no structure to be found. The fires burned down everything in its path as well as homes and the resident’s belongings. I can somewhat relate to this because I lived in southern California for 10 years and there was a fire in my neighborhood in 2007 that made everyone evacuate. Luckily my house was not burned down but the hill near my house was covered in ashes and burned down trees.
